a pekinese dog taken by a british soldier from the looting of the yuanmingyuan (summer palace) and given to queen victoria. newspapers reported that looty was ostracised by other royal dogs due to "oriental habits and appearance"* and had to be moved from buckingham to sandringham

like looty, the first chinese snuff bottles sold at auction in the early 20th century were taken from the looting of yuanmingyuan. snuff bottles were also one of the earliest categories of chinese artworks accepted by western collectors*
